Racial Justice Sunday
The Bishop of Lincoln was joined by his senior staff, trustees and members of parishes from around the diocese for a service of Choral Evensong to celebrate Racial Justice Sunday, on 11th February 2024 in Lincoln Cathedral
The service began with a recording of Go down Moses by the St Lawrence Academy schoolchildren prior to the opening processional hymn. The service, presided over by the Canon in Residence the Rev Dr Peter Neil, included psalms, canticles – among them A Canticle of Justice – and an anthem sung by the choir as is customary. Our prayers were led by the Rev Canon Sudharshan Sarvananthan, together with Halyna Romaniuk, a visitor from Ukraine, who led parts of the prayers in her native language. Children from Nettleham Junior School read prayers at the beginning and end of the service, and joined with the Bishop in holding his staff whilst leading the congregation in the Act of Commitment to Racial Justice and for the final blessing.
The sermon was delivered by Rev Yuce Kabakci, a curate at St Wulfram’s, Grantham, who spoke of the experience of living in exile (he is estranged from his own country of Turkey, from where he had to flee from persecution and death threats because of his Christian faith) and of the importance of remembrance, especially in the sharing of bread and wine together.
Pull-out Bible study material had been included in the order of service, which the congregation were encouraged to take away and use in their parishes. Following the service, the congregation came together in the Chapter House for refreshments and food provided by Tashady, a local catering company specialising in Nigerian and Caribbean cuisine.
