Last Saturday, (13th January), staff of the College of St Hugh welcomed friends old and new to Edward King House, to learn more about these two significant saints, both of whom inspire our discipleship, and our encouragement of lifelong Christian learning and vocational development throughout Greater Lincolnshire. Some 90 people joined together to celebrate the work of The College of St Hugh and the launch of St Hild, Lincoln through workshops, presentations, a pilgrims walk around Lincoln Cathedral, and in discussion and conversation about these two great lives.
St Hugh has long been an important person in this diocese, and his name has been adopted by what was the Mission and Ministry Departments of the diocese, who, as The College of St Hugh, work collaboratively to help every person take the next step in their journey of faith. On Saturday, in a variety of creative and informative ways, we learned of so much more than St Hugh’s association with a swan!
St Hild Lincoln, based in Edward King House, offers training for a variety of lay and ordained ministries in the Church of England and welcomes Christians of all denominations to study Theology for Mission and Ministry, to deepen their faith, and to prepare them in God’s service. We were richly blessed with information and anecdote on St Hild’s life of faith, and her devotion to God call.
The day ended with a moving service in the Cathedral’s St Hugh’s Choir, during which we celebrated and thanked God for work past, present, and looked forward to all that is to come. The Rev’d Canon Nick Brown, Precentor and Interim Dean of Lincoln writes:
“It was a privilege to be a part of the celebration of the work that has gone into establishing the College of St Hugh and the new partnership to form St Hild Lincoln. Seeing people come from across the diocese (and beyond) to gather in the cathedral, celebrate the heritage bequeathed to us by two saints of the past, and join in worship that celebrated the variety that is present in our common lives as saints in our own time was a joy. I look forward to the cathedral participating in the network of partnerships and collaborations that is beginning to have an impact on individuals and church communities throughout the diocese – and pray that this will have a real impact in helping make saints for the future.”
Our journey with Hild and Hugh took us back in time to hear of lives lived for the furtherance of the Gospel message; it helped us reflect on the discernment of vocations, and how we, as modern day disciples, follow God’s call; and it led us on to rejoice in the knowledge that more and more people are being prompted by the Holy Spirit to join in the transforming mission of God. We send our thanks to all those who travelled to Lincoln and participated so fully in all the day’s events; thanks too to those who shared their time, knowledge, insights and reflections, and to our colleagues at Lincoln Cathedral who welcomed us so warmly.
